Vladimir Vdovitsyn (13 May 1952 – 9 December 2014) was a Soviet and Russian computer scientist. He completed his Ph.D. in 1987. From 1986 to 2014, Vdovitsyn headed the laboratory for Information computer technologies at the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAMR KarRC RAS). He was a Deputy President for Science of KarRC RAS from 2009 to 2013, and an associate professor of mathematics faculty of Petrozavodsk State University (1981–2014).

This paper presents the selected materials from the preprint of Vladimir Vdovitsyn’s Report at the Meeting of the Academic Council of the Department of Mathematical Methods of Scientific Research and Design Automation (MMSRDA Department), Karelian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences on May 4, 1990.

After 26 years, it appears that the Report had a great influence on the formation of the main research and development areas of the present Institute of Applied Mathematical Research of the Karelian Research Centre, Russian Academy of Sciences, which is the successor to the MMSRDA Department.

Digital resources of Karelian Research Centre of RAS (KarRC RAS) related to digital libraries, repositories and search systems are described in this paper. These resources devoted to the gathering, organization and dissemination of scientific and technical information (scientific papers, archival documents) in order to use this information in theoretical and applied researches. The stages of development of these resources in connection with the history of the Karelian Research Centre of RAS subdivisions (Scientific library, Scientific archives) are presented.
